Food photography is a type of photography that uses food as its subject. In the past, photographers only captured food for cook books, restaurant advertisements, menus, and culinary magazines. Nowadays, it’s trending because of social media platforms. More people are showing what they eat because it’s been part of modern culture and lifestyle.

For some people, food is also considered art. This is because so much effort and skill are put into preparing food. The plating and presentation of food also require craftsmanship; thus, people want to capture the beauty of it.

Nowadays, food photography has been a part of people’s everyday lives, and it can be practiced by anyone. It’s also one of the easiest types of photography you can venture into. The temptation to capture and archive a master dish and in the process some memories too is what drives all of us to food photographs.

Like any other art form, Food photography is also an art which needs to be practised daily to master it.  As some one had said that the first 1000 photographs you take are not worth looking back – remember you have to click everyday to master this art form. However, there are some rules which we need to follow –

Here are ten tips for newbie food photographers:

  • Invest In A Good Camera

Having a good camera is important in any photography genre. In food photography, you should have a camera that captures the accurate texture and colors of any food item. A good camera is like the wand of a magician. It enhances the magic of the photography.

Photos that lack contrast and colour can mean bland tasting food. Thus, your camera should be able to have a good colour payoff to capture details well.

Capturing the right texture is also important. This is because it determines whether the food is appetizing or not. It’s also essential in identifying the food in photos.

There are many cameras out there you can choose from, such as a super-slender pocket camera that you can conveniently use.

  • Have Good Lighting

Your photos should have good lighting, too. So, make sure the restaurant or dinner table is well-lit. This will allow you to take better quality photos. Details of the food wouldn’t be clear in a dark area, too.

You can also try to use flash in food photography so that the colours would burst. A backlight also helps so that you can capture essential details of the food.

  • Know Your Angles

Like in portrait photography, angles are also important when you capture food. Know the right angle so you can make your food photos more appetizing to look at.

Food is usually taken in a flat position, so make sure to get the right vertical distance between the camera and the table.

Wide lenses aren’t recommended for food photography. However, nowadays, more food photographers are experimental with their shots, so you can basically use any lens or technique you like.

  • Incorporate Actions

You can incorporate actions, such as hand gestures, in your pictures. Examples of these are mixing coffee, twirling pasta, or slicing cakes. These are common gestures that people would normally do with their food.

Adding motions would make a picture more interesting and lively. More people would also relate to it more rather than capturing still images.

  • Try Macro Photography

Macro photography is now widely used for capturing food. This technique zooms into parts of the subject to capture its details.

It’s also a way to dramatize subjects and give more emphasis to them. This is a great way to emphasize the textures of food.

Macro photography is also used to showcase the food’s quality. It’s used to picture the freshness of vegetables and fruits or steak marbling.

  • Have A Plain Background

Try to have a plain or neutral-coloured background as much as possible. Opt to shoot food in plain tables. If you don’t have one, then just use a plain fabric or placemat.

A plain plate is also preferred in food photography. This is done so that the image colours would look more cohesive. The attention of the picture should also be on the subject, which is the food, and a coloured background may take that away.

  • Have More Warm Colors

Warm colours are more appetizing for the human eye. That’s why food photographers choose to shoot food with more warm colours, such as red, orange, and yellow. Food with no warm colour seems boring and generally unappetizing.

The overall tone of the photo should also be warm and not dull looking. This would make the photo more appealing to those looking at it.
