City breaks are a pretty great form of travel, allowing you to see the world’s great destinations even when you only have 3 – 5 days to get away. While it can be nice to spend a week or two lying on a beach or next to a pool, those city breaks offer culture, history, and excitement all wrapped up in one convenient package.
City breaks do require a little bit more work than other travel adventures, however. The relatively brief amount of time you’ll be there, combined with the sheer amount of amazing things to see, means that a little forethought and planning can go a long way towards getting the most from your trip. Planning to take a city break soon? Follow our handy tips for a successful getaway.
Go At The Right Time
Cities are always alive with activity. Still, that doesn’t mean that there’s always a good time to visit. While visiting during the low season can save you some money, you might have to contend with bad weather and fewer events/activities. At that point, you can question whether visiting the city was really worth it. Cities deserve to be experienced in their best — or at least not their worst — light.
Create an Itinerary
City breaks can be expensive, which is why most people limit their trips to 2 – 5 days. With time of the essence, you’ll need to have an itinerary (albeit a flexible one) to ensure you can get the most from your getaway. Read up on the things you want to see and pick a time/day when you’ll go to see them.
Keep in mind not to overpack the itinerary. It’s easy to get carried away during the planning stage and fill up your days with one amazing activity after another, but you’ll appreciate having some downtime throughout the day too!
Look Beyond the City
The city you’re visiting will likely have a lot of great attractions/sights, but it’s also worth looking at attractions that are just outside the city, too. Many cities have outstanding attractions within easy reach of downtown, but many travellers never see them because they’re so focused on the city itself. You could take a drive to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, look at day tours from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, or visit the charming city of Oxford when in London. Plus, some major cities can begin to feel a little claustrophobic after a few days — a short day trip can help keep things fresh.
Convenient Travel
You can save money by picking an awkward flight or staying in a hotel that’s a little out of the way, but you’ll be happier if you spent a little more to get a good flight and a centrally-located hotel. City trips are best when everything runs as smoothly as possible, and there’s no better way to guarantee that than by having a convenient arrival/departure time and staying in an accommodation that has all of the city’s main highlights on its doorstep.
