Anindya and I spent beautiful four and a half years in Pune. This was before the kids came into existence. So those four and half years were perhaps the most beautiful part of our married lives. Do I sound cruel? Well, any parent with two kids will relate to this. Of course, we love our children to death but those days, of absolute freedom, not being responsible for anyone else but yourself, is now a far-fetched dream. We would go out on long drives, explore the old city, drive 17 kms for a memorable meal and have a glass of mango mastani from Sujata Mastani at Sadashiv Peth, which is the original outlet.
I miss Pune dearly, especially during summer and monsoon. From mid-May onwards, the weather would change. It would cool down. Partially cast skies, we would need a quilt in the night. And the place where we stayed, at that time didn’t have much construction. With greenery all around, we could spend hours together, just sitting on the balcony and watching the clouds pass by. Come the weekend, we would crawl out of our beds and go out for our impromptu drives. I miss all that. Coming back to Mango Mastani…..

Why is it called Mango Mastani and how is it different from a mango milkshake?
Had I not stayed in Pune, I would probably never understood the meaning of this nor the essence of the drink. The major difference is that a Mango mastani is an elevated mango milkshake. There’s ice cream, topped with plenty of nuts and whipped cream in the mango milkshake. Plus the milkshake itself is quite thick. It’s a pure mango delight.
No one really knows why the name Mastani came about. However, there is a popular story around the name. Many say that it is named after Bajirao’s love ‘Mastani’. There are also some who say that it is a ‘mast’ drink and hence the name ‘Mastani’. Who knows what’s the truth, as long as it tastes wow.
