It seems like orange cinnamon is the flavor of the season. We’ve had cakes with orange cinnamon. We had the orange cinnamon chocolate from Rushk chocolates, where we also did the brand photography. I remember having a chocolate tart with orange cinnamon at a patisserie. So why not orange cinnamon hot chocolate? it’s actually a classic. There’s regular hot chocolate and then when it comes to flavours, there’s candy cane flavour, peppermint and orange cinnamon which are most talked about.
Can’t do without hot chocolate in winter
Oh yes! The tradition continues for us. Every night from late December to the end of January, both of us sit with a mug of hot chocolate and complete our day’s work. It’s only a month of indulgence and I don’t allow myself to feel guilty about it. This year we didn’t have our usual supply of Nutella. So there wasn’t any Nutella Hot Chocolate. However, we made plenty of orange cinnamon hot chocolate. Sometimes, spiked it with a little bit of kahlua. We also had with just cinnamon and once with nutmeg. The winter menu at The Daily had strawberry and truffle in their hot chocolate, which was so lush. You can read all about it here – Link
Making Orange Cinnamon Hot Chocolate
Usually, I don’t measure out anything while cooking or making hot chocolate. Baking is the only time my measuring cups and spoons come out. It’s all about balancing flavours. However, for the sake of this recipe, I measured out the ingredients. You need only milk, dark chocolate, orange rind, cinnamon and a little bit of cocoa powder. I used 2 cups of milk, 50 gms of dark chocolate, a tbsp of orange rind, half an inch of cinnamon and a heaped teaspoon of cocoa powder. Cut the chocolate into very small pieces. You can either slice the rind of the orange or grate it. You have to be careful about not using any white part of the orange peel.
Add every dry ingredient and half a cup of milk in a saucepan. Put it on medium flame and let the chocolate melt. Keep stirring so that the chocolate melts faster and evenly. Once it becomes smooth, add the rest of the milk and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes because we want the flavour of the cinnamon and the orange rind. You can add sugar if you need it. And you can also adjust the quantity of chocolate and cocoa powder as per your taste. Once you start getting the orange and cinnamon flavour, turn off the heat. Strain the hot chocolate and pour it into mugs. Serve with more shaved chocolate or marshmallows.
