Two flatmates of Cardiff university, who had a rocking 1 year together met with their respective husbands and kids too. This was the first time we were Komal, Aashil and their son, Kairav together. Aashil got along with all of us like a house on fire right from the beginning. After the compulsory dinner at our place, they started the sad story of how no place (almost) in Kolkata could live upto their expectation in terms of food. I did not understand whether it was something to do with their palate or the food was bad. They tried the nostalgia wrapped eateries in Park Street and almost all failed them. Although they did not try Mocambo, which in my opinion has some signature dishes which can woo you. What can you recommend to an young foodie couple from Bangalore in Kolkata? HardRock Cafe? The Fatty Bao? Naaah .

It was home cooked food for an authentic Bengali meal cooked by Madhushree which salvaged the situation to an extent. She had made Dal, beguni (egg plant fritters), Alu posto ( potatoes in poppy seed paste and the translation doesn’t do justice), katla macher jhol with phulkopi and lau pata bhekti paturi (bhekti fish steamed with mustard paste in gourd leaves) and chutney. When it came to eating out, they had already eaten at The Grid (which is a place we often recommend to our friends). So that was also ruled out. The last option left was The Salt House.

This is not about the food that we had there but the Peanut butter milk shake which we, the guys went tripping on. There was no alcohol and what’s a fun Sunday lunch without beer atleast. Shakes and milk shakes have never excited me but on being offered a sip from Aashil, I ordered one for myself too. My brother in law also ordered 1 for himself. Halfway through the drink, we heard from the girls – what’s with these boys? They are having peanut butter shake? (with loads of pittance in the tone) . 3 of us liked it and defended our stance strongly and successfully. We offered the girls  both the mothers) and no wonder their opinion also changed.

The Peanut butter protein shake once again got made at home and I have been trying to explain the taste. It’s one of the favourite goo (from gooey) foods across the globe and who knew November is celebrated as a Peanut butter month in USA. The saltiness hits you on the first instant and then the gooey part. When it comes to shakes it gets slightly different. In The Salt House, Auronee had added crushed Kaos cookies and vanilla Ice cream to not only balance but carve out a sweetness too.

Why Peanut butter protein shake?

We tried the indulgent version at home and then realised that it was too indulgent to be had on an everyday basis. So, next came the healthy version, which I believe is a great breakfast option. Both of us have our protein shakes on a regular basis. During the pregnancy, Madhushree could not deal with the smell of the protein powder. That was when her nutritionist had advised her to mix up the protein powder with any favourable natural ingredient. Hence, the idea of using peanut butter with the protein powder came about. And trust me when I say it, this peanut butter protein shake is just not a healthy protein packed power drink but also pure and unadulterated happiness. So go for it and tell us how you like it.
